With the release of CUET Mass Media and Communication Syllabus 2025, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has clearly outlined major topics and subcategories. Culture and Communication: What is culture? The relationship between culture and mass media, communication in the cultural context, media as a vehicle of cultural transmission, and representation and stereotyping in mass media.

Communication and Social Change: Social change: meaning; media as a catalyst for social change (with examples of various social movements).

History of Newspapers, Radio and Television in India and History of New Media: Evolution of media, key developments and how these are impacted by technology and societal change.

2. Journalism

Qualities of a good Journalist: An understanding of the following: a nose for News, inquisitiveness, language skills, trustworthiness, and empathy.

Ethical Issues in Journalism: A brief understanding of sensationalism, fake news, paid news, plagiarism, advertorials, partisan reporting, sting operations, defamation, freedom of speech, and expression.

3. Advertising and Television Production

Advertising:

  • Advertising concepts & process,
  • Functions of Advertising,
  • Types of Advertising (Cross promotions, Merchandise, Conversion Advertising)
  • Forms of Advertising

TV:

  • Pre-production stage
  • Production stage
  • Post-production Stage

4. Radio

Writing for Radio: Characteristics of a Radio Script: conversational language, active voice, simple sentences, avoidance of technical jargon, and the capability of creating

Recording Radio Programming Imagery: Brief understanding of the radio studio and transmission equipment, including types of microphones, amplifiers, sound mixers, speakers, and audio recording.

5. Cinema

History of Cinema: A brief understanding of the early experiments by Lumiere Brothers, John Grierson, Robert Flaherty and Dada Saheb Phalke.

Cinema Genres: Defining genre theory; an understanding of the various types of genres (with suitable examples): action, westerns, comedy, crime, drama, fantasy/sci-fi, historical, animation, romance and musical.

Cinema and Social Change: Parallel Cinema movement in India: Issues depicted and low budget production process (about examples such as Shyam Benegal’s Manthan).

6. Social Media

  • Definition of social media.
  • Types of social media platforms: Self-explanatory
  • Role of social media in democracy: Role of social media in creating collective identities concerning sharing of information; cyber activism (with suitable examples)
  • Cyber Crime: An understanding of online bullying, stalking, trolling, and fraud.
  • Netiquette: Meaning and importance of netiquette; an understanding of netiquette, such as: identification of
  • oneself; respect for others’ privacy, use of appropriate language and imagery; do not spam.

7. New Media

  • The Internet is the meeting point of all the mass media.
  • Broadcasting
  • The mass communication model is one in which a few are transmitting to many receivers.
  • Gigantic organisation.
  • Huge technical infrastructure
  • Large-scale revenue.
  • The changed paradigm due to the Internet.

CUET Mass Media and Communication Exam Pattern

According to the CUET Exam Pattern 2025, students must attempt 50 out of 50 questions, each carrying five marks. However, candidates have to remain cautious about the negative marking scheme. For each incorrect attempt, students have to lose one mark. Accordingly, the exam duration will be 120 minutes. Within this duration, students have to answer 50 questions. So, they should spend 2 minutes/per question, and the last 20 minutes should be kept as a buffer for cross-checking.
