IIIT Bhagalpur was established by the MHRD, Government of India in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. The college started functioning in 2017 and is a joint venture of the Government of India, the Government of Bihar, and Beltron. The college is mentored by IIT Guwahati, hence the students can make use of the academic expertise, research-oriented faculties, and resources of this college.
IIIT Bhagalpur is known as an Institute of National Importance under the Act of Parliament. The institute is currently operating from the building of Bhagalpur College of Engineering (BCE). Bhagalpur IIIT, through four departments, offers UG, PG, diploma, and PhD courses to students across Engineering and various other streams.
Separate hostels are available for boys and girls and are located on the campus of IIIT Bhagalpur. Located in Bhagalpur, this college includes NSS (National Service Scheme) activities in its curriculum to strengthen students' obligation to provide public service. IIIT Bhagalpur has 21 faculty members. The Department of Basic Science and Humanities has started a new course, namely the BTech programme in Mathematics and Computing from 2023. In 2021, this esteemed college's Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) started offering MTech programmes in the Artificial Intelligence and Data Science stream.

- Central Library: The institution owns a well-equipped modern library to cater to the information needs of the students as well as the faculty members. The library has acquired more than 3500 printed volumes of books from reputed publishers. It is also equipped with modern facilities and resources.
- Computer Centre: The Computer Centre is in charge of the maintenance of day to day computational requirements of the institute.
