Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), Sarang came into existence in 1982 and was governed directly by Govt. of Odisha on behalf of Odisha College of Engineering (OCE). Previously, in 1981, the institute named as Modern Polytechnic (MPT) provided diploma courses in civil, electrical, mechanical, and mining survey engineering. In 1987, OCE & MPT merged and became known as IGIT, Sarang, and its administration was handed over to an Autonomous Society.
