Kannur University was founded under Act 22 of 1996 by the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Prior to this, it was initially established as Malabar University through an Ordinance issued by the Governor of Kerala on November 9, 1995. The official inauguration of the University took place on March 2, 1996, by the then Chief Minister of Kerala, Sri. A.K. Antony. The primary aim of the Kannur University Act 1996 is to create a teaching, residential, and affiliating institution in the state of Kerala, thereby enhancing higher education.
Kannur University is distinguished by its multi-campus structure, with various campuses located throughout its jurisdiction. The Act stipulates that the University is to establish, maintain, manage, and develop campuses in Kannur, Kasaragod, Nileswaram, Mangattuparamba, Mananthavady, Payyannur, Thalassery, and other necessary locations to provide educational and research opportunities aimed at advancing knowledge in Science, Technology, and other pertinent fields.
