The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has its roots in the founding of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Madras, in 1868, which was subsequently shifted to Coimbatore. In 1920, the college became affiliated with Madras University. TNAU assumed complete responsibility for agricultural education and research, offering useful assistance to the State Agricultural Department through its research findings. Until 1946, the Agricultural College and Research Institute at Coimbatore was the only one that provided agricultural education for the whole of South India. It was declared a postgraduate center in 1958, with Master's and Doctoral degrees. The Agricultural College and Research Institute at Madurai was formed in 1965. These two colleges were the nucleus of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, which was formally formed in 1971.
