Tripura University was originally a Post-Graduate Wing of Calcutta University, established in 1976, and attained full-fledged university status as a state university in 1987. It was declared a Central University in 2007. The university currently has 44 departments, two faculties, and four Centres of Study, along with four departments in the Directorate of Distance Education. Tripura University is accredited B++ grade by NAAC. It provides a combined total of 114 programs that comprise 41 PhD programs, 60 postgraduate courses, 7 undergraduate programs, and 6 postgraduate diploma courses. The process of applying for Tripura University is done online. The candidates have to fill out the application form for the entrance test and remit the appropriate application fee as per the course the candidate wants to pursue. Library

The Central Library of Tripura University has a vast collection of more than 97,500 books and documents, complemented by an abundance of reports, cutting-edge resources, and non-print media. The library has 141 national and international journals related to the courses it offers, along with e-journals under the UGC INFONET programme. Users have access to about 8,000 journals with millions of full-text articles across various disciplines. The library facilities are now computerized, and the creation of an integrated database is in process using "SOUL" software, with new cutting-edge technology to be explored through INLIBNET.

Hostel Facilities

The university offers hostel facilities, such as a new building of 100 seat capacity for research scholars. An ambulance is on campus for medical emergencies. Hostels have common rooms with recreational facilities, reading rooms with reading material, magazines, newspapers, and television rooms.

Sports Complex

Tripura University has a whole range of sporting events held under its board of sports with inter-departmental football, volleyball, and cricket tournaments, among others, in which students, faculty, and non-academic staff actively participate. The university has annual tournaments involving affiliated colleges competing in football, cricket, volleyball, judo, table tennis, and athletics and competing for East Zone and All India Inter-University meets.
