Vidyasagar University was formed in 1978 by the Government of West Bengal in honor of devout educational intentions. The proposal was accepted by the University Grants Commission (U.G.C.), which in turn led to the constitution of a Planning Committee in March 1979 and the submission of its report subsequently that year. The Vidyasagar University Act came into effect in 1981, and its first Vice Chancellor was Professor Bhupesh Chandra Mukherjee from September 29, 1981. Classes were inaugurated on June 1, 1985, by the affiliation of 30 colleges. On January 15, 1986, the main campus started, with the introduction of six postgraduate departments.
