According to a coaching expert, “taking negative marking lightly has led many JEE aspirants to jeopardise their performance by attempting to guess answers, assuming that losing just one mark for a wrong answer is worth the risk of gaining four marks for a correct one. However, this mindset is flawed and statistically inadvisable.”

JEE Main 2025 Session 2: Tips to Tackle Negative Marking

Candidates who are wondering how to tackle negative marking in JEE Main 2025 exam can follow the tips below.

Don’t Guess

When you read a question during the exam, assess how confident you feel about it. If you can remember the concept, go ahead and answer. However, if you are unsure how to tackle it, it is better to skip the question. Guessing can lead to losing marks.

Eliminate Wrong Options

Try to narrow down your choices for multiple-choice questions by eliminating incorrect answers. If you can remove two wrong options, your chances of selecting the correct answer increase. But if you can't eliminate any options, it is best to skip that question.

Manage Your Time Wisely

Time management is essential, even with negative marking. Avoid spending too much time on a single question, especially if you are uncertain about it. If a question takes over two minutes and you are still unsure, mark it for review and move on. Focus first on questions you can answer confidently, and return to the difficult ones if time allows.

Watch Out for Tricky Questions

If a question seems overly complicated or lengthy, consider whether it is worth attempting. Sometimes it is better to skip such questions rather than waste time and risk losing marks. Also, be cautious of easy questions that require long calculations; they might cause you to miss out on answering two or three other questions.

Focus on Quality Over Quantity

The accuracy of your answers is more important than how many questions you attempt. Aim to solve questions correctly rather than rushing to answer as many as possible. A correct answer gives you more points than getting two wrong answers takes away. For instance, aiming for 50 correct answers is often better than trying for 75 with several mistakes.

Find a Good Balance

Avoid being too cautious and skipping too many questions, leading to a lower score. On the other hand, trying to answer too many questions without confidence can hurt your results. A good strategy is to confidently answer around 85–90% of the questions and leave the rest unattempted if unsure.

Trust Your Gut

It is common to second-guess yourself under exam pressure. If you have prepared well, trust your instincts. It is okay to move on if a question does not seem familiar or feels out of your knowledge range. Staying calm and having a strategic approach will help you avoid unnecessary mistakes.
