UP Board Exam 2024: Absenteeism And Cheating Scandals Found
Last update: Nov 20, 2024
The ongoing Uttar Pradesh Board Examinations for grades 10 and 12 are witnessing widespread absence and cheating, raising concerns about the integrity and effectiveness of the exams. During the Mathematics and Automobiles examinations for class 10 on February 27, 2024, over 1.40 lakh students were declared absent, indicating significant disengagement among the student population.
Mr. Dibyakant Shukla, the UP board's secretary, reported that out of the total 21,26,179 registered applicants for the Mathematics examination, 1,33,945 were noticeably absent. Similarly, 12,894 of the 3,05,324 applicants who registered for the Automobiles examination were noticeably absent from the exam halls. These findings underscore the magnitude of the challenge educators face in ensuring student participation and commitment to their academic responsibilities.
Mr. Shukla emphasized that the reported absenteeism rates are preliminary, as the board is still calculating the overall number of students who missed their exams. This underscores the need for further investigation and analysis to identify the root causes of such widespread absence.

Aside from absence, instances of cheating undermined the credibility of the examination process. During the exam, authorities caught four pupils, two from grade 10 and two from grade 12, using unfair means. Cheating incidents occurred in districts such as Gonda, Azamgarh, and Shahjahanpur, revealing a troubling pattern of academic dishonesty among students.
The UP Board Examinations, which ran from February 22nd to March 9th, 2024, saw a considerable number of absentee students from the start. On the first day of the exam, more than three lakh students were reported absent, raising concerns about the circumstances that contribute to such widespread disengagement from the exam.
Furthermore, the UP Board Examinations took place at 8269 centers in the first shift and 5956 centers in the second shift. Notably, these testing centers included facilities within jails specifically designed to aid the examination procedure for detained pupils.
The incidences of absenteeism and cheating raise doubts about the credibility of the UP Board Examinations and emphasize the need for strict measures to safeguard the integrity of the examination process. Education authorities must proactively address the root causes of absenteeism and cheating, ensuring that tests are conducted fairly and transparently.
