The world took notice of India's vast business potential when the deregulation plan for the country's oil industry was announced in 1997. The petroleum industry has evolved from a regulated sector to one where gasoline and its byproducts are branded and positioned to draw in as many customers as possible. In 2006, GERMI (Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute), a trust and society formed by GSPC (Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation), a Government of Gujarat undertaking, founded the Management School as the Institute of Petroleum Management, Gandhinagar (IPMG) to meet the managerial manpower needs of the Energy and Infrastructure Sector. After GERMI created Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU) in 2007, IPMG joined PDEU as a constituent and rebranded as the School of Petroleum Management (SPM).
