The University of North Bengal is a government-funded major research university located in Siliguri. Otherwise known as North Bengal University (NBU), it was founded in 1962 under an Act of the Legislature of West Bengal. NBU has recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and a 'Grade A' accreditation by NAAC. It is also an AIU member of the Association of Indian Universities. The university is also the affiliating institution for 50 colleges located in Alipurduar, Coochbehar, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Uttar Dinajpur districts.
NBU consists of two faculties that have over 30 departments offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses, diplomas, and vocational courses. It provides courses in different subjects of Arts, Commerce, and Science, such as Microbiology, Law, Mathematics, Economics, Sociology, Mass Communication, Management, Computer Science & Application, Chemistry, and History. Besides the normal courses, NBU also provides courses under the Directorate of Distance Education. It also possesses a Centre for Innovative Studies (CIS), which is a collaborative effort of NBU and Techno India Academia, that provides various courses in the domain of higher education. It also provides virtual learning materials through its partnership with Coursera, Udemy, edX, NPTEL, and others.

Candidates fulfilling the eligibility criteria can submit their application form by visiting the official website of the university. The students must submit the form in online mode only. The university has reserved 60% seats in PG programs for the students belonging to the University of North Bengal and the remaining 40% seats are available for students from other universities. Step 2: Selection: Selection is done on the basis of merit list/ written test/ entrance exam. Admission to MBA requires a valid score in CMAT/ MAT/ CAT/ ATMA/ JMET/ XAT/ NBU-MAT followed by GD and PI. MA, MSc, MCA and LLM admissions are offered on the basis of a written test followed by viva-voce conducted by the university
Step 3: Payment of Fee: Candidates are required to pay admission fee for their desired course to secure the seat at NBU.
According to the North Bengal University NIRF report 2024, the median package offered during UG 5-year and PG 2-year placements 2023 stood at INR 1.8 LPA and INR 3 LPA, respectively. As per the last year NIRF report 2023, a total of 73 UG and PG students were placed during North Bengal University placements 2022. The median package offered to UG (5-year) and PG (2-year) students was INR 60,000 and INR 3.27 LPA during North Bengal University placements 2022, respectively.
