Kolkata, in the Indian state of West Bengal, is home to Bethune College. It was founded in 1879, has UGC and NAAC accreditation, and is connected to the University of Calcutta in Kolkata. As the first women's college in Asia and India, Bethune College produced the first two female graduates in the history of the British colonial Empire. Since its founding, Bethune College has played a crucial part in the education and emancipation of women, thereby enriching their lives. On June 16, 1879, Bethune College set out on its adventure. On June 16, 1879, the Calcutta Gazette announced that Baboo Sosi Bhusan Dutt, a lecturer at Ravenshaw College in Cuttack, had been appointed as the first lecturer in the Bethune School's college department. As a result, June 16, 1879, has been recognized as Bethune College's founding day.

Eight distinct specializations are offered at Bethune College Kolkata's Bachelor of Arts (H) programs: Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sanskrit, Hindi, and Psychology. The college provides Bachelor of Science Honours courses in addition to Arts courses. Any major course from Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology, Statistics, and Psychology is available to students with a scientific background. Each B.A. and B.Sc. program has a different overall strength depending on the subject. There are 269 places available for the B.A. (H) program overall, which includes all eight specializations. The college has 275 places available for the nine B.Sc. subjects it provides. Each of the honors programs lasts for three years.
