The Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW) was founded in May 2013 by the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi through Delhi Act 09 of 2012 as a non-affiliating university to support and encourage studies, research, technology, innovation, incubation, and extension work in emerging areas of professional education among women with a focus on engineering, technology, applied sciences, architecture, and related fields. The university's goal is to achieve excellence in these and related fields. The Directorate of Training and Technical Education, Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, founded the first engineering institution exclusively for women in 1998 under the name Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT). The institution became Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University's first constituent college in 2002. The former IGIT has made a substantial contribution to the expansion of high-quality technical education in the nation throughout the years, and it is now not just one of Delhi's top universities but also the most prominent college in northern India.
The University's growth has been exponential since 2013. In four fields—computer science engineering, information technology, electronics & communications, and robotics & automation engineering—it has maintained B.Tech. programs. For the first time, the institute launched M.Tech. programs in specialized fields of technology, such as robotics and automation engineering, mobile pervasive computing, VLSI design, and information security management. In 2014, the Ph.D. program in a number of fields was launched. The University launched the B.Arch. program in 2015.
