At the University of Madras, the Institute of Distance Education (IDE) was founded in 1981. It covers a vast range of programs to support learners to achieve their educational, career, and personal objectives. IDE thus marks more than 25 years of service in the distance education landscape with quality education in undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and certificate courses in a vast array of disciplines. For this reason alone, the fee structure will not be unduly high, but rather affordable and planned in such a manner to make education accessible to the widest, diversified spectrum of students.
Undergraduate (UG) Fees

- Hostel Charge: Rs 30,000/- per annum
- The registration fee collected per semester amounts to INR 1,000.
- Lab Fees: Rs. 2,000 per semester for science courses
- Library charges: INR 500 per year
Payment Methods and Installments
The fee can be paid through a host of options by the students:
- Internet Payment: Through the IDE website.
- Bank Transfer: The funds are directly transferred into the university's bank account.
- Demand Draft: to be made payable to the University of Madras in Chennai.
- Installment plans: These are designed for students who wish to pay in installments.
Scholarships and Financial Aid
IDE provides financial assistance to students through a number of scholarships:
- Scholarships based on merit are given to students who exhibit outstanding academic success.
- Scholarships for sports: For students who play sports well.
- Need-Based Scholarships: Available to students from areas with lower economic status.
