Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith popularly known as MGKVP, is a public university in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, established in 1921 by the leader of the Bhoodan Movement, Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta. This university was once known as Kashi Vidyapith before being renamed in honor of the Great Soul, Mahatma Gandhi. The university played a significant part during the British rule in India by emphasizing the nationalist values of the students and providing education in the Hindi language, a medium of instruction. There was a view that whatever the institution offered had to be in unity with the nation's cultures and thus MGKVP was at the forefront of making Hindi the medium of instruction.
The programs are spread across several campuses and the disciplines available include arts, sciences, commerce, management, law, and technology among others. It has a Dr. Bhagwandas Central Library which was started in 1921, the library has over 230000 books. It is also crowded with heritage structures, including the Bharat Mata Mandir which is a marble temple for the nation.
The Reservation policies of SC/ST and other impoverished sections are formulated in MGKVP as they impact the policy of inclusive education extensively. Throughout the years, have witnessed the birth of many political and cultural leaders such as the former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
