Xavier’s College was founded in 1869 by the society of Jesus, a christian religious organisation started by St. Ignatious of Loyala. It started with the purpose of educating the Christian community in India. On January 30, 1869, it was affiliated to the University of Mumbai. It became a constituent college of the University, as a result of the Mumbai University Act 1953.
St. Xavier’s College conducted the BA, BSc and B.Com. Government aided degree courses on campus along with the BA, MCJ, BMS, BSc, IT and B.Com (BAF) degree courses on a self-financing basis. Masters courses (Aided( in Botany, Geology, Life science, microbiology and Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, MSc (Self-Financing) in Biotechnology, Physics, Big Data Analytics, and MA (Self-financing) in Public Policy, Psychology and Economisc are also conducted.
Diploma/ Certificate courses on Bioinformatics, Clinimcal researc, foreign science and criminal law, gemmology and gem Appreciation, Applied Philosophy and Ethics, counselling psychology, expressive arts therapy and aspects of ancient indian histiry, culture, and Archaeology are also held on collaboration with other institutions or group.

Admission Process
Admission of students into the autonomous degree courses will be based on the aggregate marks in the qualifying examination or its equivalent, for both the Undergraduate and the postgraduate courses.
An entrance exam is conducted for
UG courses: Arts (Mass communication and journalism- MCJ), Management Studies (BMS) and BSc (IT).
PG course: Public Policy, Psychology, Big Data Analytics, Physics (Astrophysics), and Economics.
- Admission for the courses MSc in Botany, Geology, Life Science and Microbiology, Big Data analytics, Biotechnology, Physics, MA in Ancient Indian History Culture and Archaeology, Public Policy, Psychology, Economics is based on 60% weightage to the entrance test (objective question paper) and 40% weightage to class XII aggregate marks.
The University of Mumbai has made it mandatory for all candidates seeking admission to the first-year courses in the Degree colleges to fill in the ‘Pre-Admission Online Registration form’ which is available on http://mum.digitaluniversity.ac/
Actual admission to all courses will be on the announced days, through an interview of the candidate and a parent/guardian. The offer of admission will be notified on the website and the college notice board. On being admitted, the student shall immediately submit the following documents (original along with attested photocopies):

Scholarship
Under the government of India Scholarship or Government of Maharashtra Freeship schemes for BC students (SC/ST/DT/NT/OBC/SBC), certain scholarships/ freeships are provided to the students who have the certificate issued by the Maharashtra Government.
Annual Family income (AFI) Eligibility conditions for scholarship/ Freeship
- SC students: AFI<2 lakh PA (Scholarship)
- SC students: AFI> 2 lakh PA ( Freeship)
NT/VJ/SBC/ST and OBC categories students will have to submit the Non-Creamy-Layer certificate for such fee concessions.

Campus
Library: The college library provies print and electronic resources for all academic and related activities of the students and staff, services for the retrieval and use of these resources and adequate infrastructure and spaces for their use.
Computer center: It is called the ‘Xavier Knowledge centre’. It is solar-powered and is situated on the first floor of the Hostel Building and Invluces 5 computer Laboratoreis having about 125 computers in all.
Gymkhana: It is called the fell gymkhana. It has facilities for body-building, badminton, table-tennis, carrom and chess. The college has full-size basket ball and volleyball courts. The college has leased from the BMC the use of a cricket pitch on Azad Maidan.
Multi-Media centres
The smith centre for audio-visual instruction (SCAVI): The SCAVI was inaugurated in December 1979. It has audio-visual instruments and techniques at the service of staff and students.
The Multi-Media Romm (MMR): is a centralised facility for multimedia-based instructions and presentations for their staff and students.
SH Mehta Hall: was inaugurated in February 2020, with a grant from the Onward Foundation, in memory of their alumna Shaila Mehta.
Common Rooms: There are separate Common rooms for male and females students as well as for the teaching and non-teaching staff members.
Canteen anf foyer: This is a spacious area with a view of greenery. A variety of refreshments and meals are available here. It is a place on the campus not only for leisure and refreshment but also for students to bond, discuss and even work on assignments and projects.
Hostels: The campus hotel can accommodate 104 male students. Only first and third years UG students and PG students are admitted into the hostel. The rooms in the hostel are either for 2,3 or 4 occupants. Applications are accepted only after admission to the college has been secured.
Placement
This centre endeavours to bring reputable companies for campus placement for their students. It alsi trains students to write their CV and get acquainted with the selection process of corporates. A staff-student committee operated this centre.
Counselling centre
It provides personal conuselling- Interview for better personal and social adjustment, personality evaluation tests for self-improvement, vocational testing, information on careers, professions and specialised studies in India and abroad, information on scholarships and financial assistance schemes. It also helps in organising orientation programms for the newly admitted students.
