Initially established in 1951 as a college connected with the University of Madras, Jamal Mohamed College was later affiliated with Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, upon its formation in 1982. Jamal Mohamed College is located in Tiruchirappalli, the capital city of Tamil Nadu. This college was founded as a minority institution who's main goal is giving the oppressed and socially backward members of society a higher education.
According to the NIRF Rankings 2023, the college has achieved the esteemed 56th position among the top-ranked institutions. It is noteworthy to mention that the college was awarded a Three Star rating in 2019 by the MHRD innovation cell of the Institutions Innovation Council (IIC), Government of India. The Department of Mathematics received the FIST Scheme in 2008, and the Departments of Zoology, Botany, and Physics received it in 2004 from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
In 2019, the Departments of Mathematics, Physics, Botany, Zoology, and Computer Science have once again been included in the DST FIST Scheme. After making a strong case against numerous other universities, five science departments—including math, physics, chemistry, botany, and zoology—were selected for further consideration and given the Star College Scheme by the Department of BioTechnology (DBT) in 2020.
