Will There Be Major Changes in the CAT 2025 Exam Pattern?

After the release of the CAT 2025 notification, candidates are thinking about the changes in the CAT 2025 exam pattern. While the overall format—three sections and a two-hour duration—has remained largely consistent, subtle tweaks have often been introduced over the years.

Take CAT 2024, for example. The total number of questions was bumped up to 68 from 66, and there were slight changes in how questions were spread across the VARC and DILR sections. These minor shifts, though not drastic, can influence how candidates approach the paper.

Over the past ten years, CAT has steadily evolved—from a three-hour test with 100 questions to a compressed version with 68 questions in 120 minutes. The table below outlines how the structure has changed year by year.

CAT Score vs Percentile 2024: Section-wise and Overall Scores

Understanding the relationship between the CAT score and percentile is crucial for setting realistic score targets. Since the difficulty level of CAT 2024 was slightly lower than the previous year, candidates needed higher raw scores to achieve the same percentiles. CAT 2025 FAQs

Has the CAT 2025 exam pattern changed from last year?

No, the overall format of the CAT exam has the same structure. There have been a few changes in recent years. In CAT 2024, there are 68 questions instead of 66, with a few changes in how questions were distributed across sections. CAT 2025 is expected to follow a similar pattern, with small but strategic adjustments.

How many sections will be there in CAT 2025?

The exam will have three sections as usual—Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). Each section will test a different set of skills important for management studies.

What is the total duration of the CAT 2025 exam?

The exam will run for a total of 120 minutes. Candidates will get 40 minutes for each section, and the sections must be attempted in a fixed sequence, as provided on the screen during the test.

How many questions will CAT 2025 have?

In CAT 2024, the number of questions was 68, which was a slight increase compared to previous years. Unless a significant change is announced, CAT 2025 is also expected to have around the same number of questions.

Was CAT always a two-hour exam?

No, it wasn’t. A few years ago, the CAT used to be a three-hour-long exam with 100 questions. However, starting in 2020, the duration was reduced to two hours, and the number of questions was also scaled down.

Why does the number of questions change every year?

The IIMs adjust the number of questions occasionally to ensure a balanced level of difficulty or to better structure the test. These minor changes don’t affect the overall format much, but can influence a candidate’s time management strategy.

Which section is the most challenging in CAT?

That depends on the individual. Some candidates find Quantitative Aptitude tough, while others struggle more with Reading Comprehension or Logical Reasoning. The difficulty also tends to vary slightly from year to year.

Will CAT 2025 include both MCQs and non-MCQs?

Yes, the test usually features a mix of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and non-MCQs, also known as TITA (Type In The Answer) questions. These are spread across all three sections and must be answered accordingly.

Are there any official announcements about major changes in CAT 2025?

There are no major changes introduced in the official notification of the CAT 2025. Candidates should still be prepared for small changes, especially in the number or type of questions in each section, as has been the trend over the last few years.

What’s the best way to prepare for the unpredictable pattern of CAT?

Flexibility is key. Focus on mastering the core concepts and take plenty of mock tests to adapt to different patterns. It also helps to regularly analyse past-year trends to understand how the exam has evolved and what adjustments to expect.
