Epil Gagrai's profile picture

Updated on Jun 27, 2025

Epil Gagrai

The BPharm 1st year curriculum establishes the academic base in pharmaceutical sciences. In the first 2 semesters, students learn the fundamental disciplines, such as Human Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, and Pharmacognosy. These subjects enable the students to learn the fundamentals of drug composition, human biology, and medicine formulation and analysis.

In addition to foundational theoretical courses, the curriculum also has practical laboratory practice. There are remedial Biology or Mathematics courses for the students who have not studied Biology or Mathematics during 10+2.

The 1st year curriculum is planned not merely to establish scientific knowledge but also to instill communication skills, ethics, and a general perception of healthcare obligations. The first year acts as the foundation for further learning of advanced and specialized nature in subsequent semesters, transforming students into efficient and well-informed future pharmacists.

BPharm 1st Year Syllabus FAQs

What are the topics of study in BPharm 1st year?

In the 1st year of BPharm, the students are trained in a mix of theoretical and practical subjects such as Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry (Inorganic and Physical), Basic Electronics & Computer Applications, Anatomy and Physiology, and Remedial Mathematics or Biology.

Is there a practical component in the syllabus of the 1st year?

Yes, there is a practical laboratory component to all major subjects. The students will be doing drug formulation experiments, chemical analysis experiments, microscopy experiments, and physiological tests in order to bridge theory with practical expertise.

Why is Remedial Mathematics or Biology taken?

These are remedial mathematics or remedial biology courses provided to the students according to their earlier academic stream. Students with a biology background take Remedial Mathematics, whereas students with a math background take Remedial Biology so that all the students acquire the basic knowledge required for study in pharmacy.

Are computer skills covered in the 1st year of BPharm?

Yes, Basic Electronics & Computer Applications is included in the 1st-year syllabus. It familiarizes students with basic computing operations, applications in pharmacy, and electronic devices widely utilized in pharmaceutical environments.

What is the mode of assessment of the BPharm 1st-year syllabus?

The assessment of BPharm is internal examination, practical tests, and university-level semester-end tests. Both the theory and practical parts need to be cleared separately by the students to clear each subject successfully.

Does the BPharm 1st year include human anatomy and physiology?

Yes, Anatomy, Physiology & Health Education (APHE) – I is part of the second semester. This subject helps students understand the structure and function of the human body, which is essential for understanding drug actions and therapeutic applications.

Are students allowed to choose any electives in the 1st year of BPharm?

No, BPharm's 1st-year syllabus is all core and remedial courses. Electives or specialization options are generally provided in the later semesters, especially the final year (Semester 8).
