The Indian Parliament has recently passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which authorises the establishment of a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam. This institution will be the 22nd IIM in India and represents a significant step towards expanding premier management education to the Northeast region.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted that this is the ninth IIM to be founded during the present government’s tenure. He emphasised the importance of Guwahati as a vital educational and economic centre for the Northeast. With an investment of Rs 555 crore, the new institute aims to provide world-class management education and contribute to the broader socio-economic development of Assam and its neighbouring states.
The bill received approval from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, symbolising bipartisan support for the initiative, despite some opposition members raising concerns about faculty vacancies and student welfare in existing IIMs.
IIM Guwahati will join the prestigious group of IIMs across India, with plans to start admitting students from the current academic year itself. The establishment of this institute aligns with the government’s vision to promote inclusive growth, encourage regional development, and enhance access to quality higher education in previously underserved areas, fostering economic progress and innovation in the region.
This milestone development also coincides with broader efforts to internationalise Indian higher education and strengthen the country’s position as a global hub for management studies.
