MD Obstetrics & Gynecology FAQs

Is MS and MD the same degree?

No, MD and MS are not the same. MD is a general medical degree focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, while MS (Master of Surgery) is a surgical degree specializing in surgical techniques and procedures. MD is not a surgeon. However, the Obstetrics & Gynaecology course combines both surgical and medical aspects, therefore, experts consider MS and MD equivalent in that case.

Which degree is higher, MD or MS?

In MCI, neither one is superior or higher degree as MD and MS are both distinct specialisation degrees at postgraduate level. One can either do MD or MS based on the specific career interest and goal. MD programs prepare you for a medical career but not surgical aspects whereas an MS means you become a Surgeon with a specific speciality.

Is MD Obstetrics & Gynaecology required for a career in academics?

Yes, if you want to become a professor, particularly in medical college, an MS or MD is required along with a significant medical experience. MD in OBGYN provides the necessary knowledge and clinical expertise necessary to teach medical students and residents the intricacies of women's health, including pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecological conditions.
