M.Sc Mathematics Admission: Eligibility Criteria and Entrance Exams

• Updated on  Jul 30, 2025, by Kirti Mehendiratta

MSc Mathematics is a two-year postgraduate program that offers in-depth knowledge of advanced mathematical concepts, theories, and analytical techniques. The course is perfectly suited for a student with a passion for mathematics who wishes to venture into research, teaching, data science, finance, or pursue a high-level education, such as a Ph.D. program. It covers fields such as Algebra, Calculus, Number Theory, Differential Equations, and linear programming, among others.

Admission to the MSc Mathematics is usually based upon entrance papers, either at the national, state, or university level. The most common tests are CUET PG, IIT JAM, and CETs at the state level, whereas the best colleges, such as BHU, DU, and JNU, use their own centralized admission process. Eligibility, exam schedule, fees, and admission process differ across institutions, but generally, students should have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics with minimum eligible marks or equivalent CGPA in a related field of study.

M.Sc Mathematics Eligibility Criteria

The students who want to pursue Master of Science in Mathematics must fulfill the requirements of admissions as outlined by the individual university or entrance examining body. It might differ according to the institution or the entrance examination that is being written, like CUET PG, IIT JAM, university-specific entrance exams, etc.

  • The applicants must have acquired a Bachelor of Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a similar degree from a recognised university. The candidates have obtained a minimum aggregate of 50% marks in the last qualifying degree (45% in case of OBC/SC/ST).
  • Furthermore, those students who are in their last year of graduation and are to receive their degree prior to the date of admission may apply, though with such students, they must issue the correct evidence of having passed successfully with the appropriate marks by the time of the admission.
  • In general, M.Sc. Mathematics programs do not have upper age limits to their admission; however, universities may restrict entry by a certain age or other requirements in the admission terms.
  • Most government and government-aided institutions can only grant admission to Indian nationals, whereas in the non-governmental institutions, NRI/OCI/PIO candidates can be given seats in management quota seats on the basis of the regulations of each particular institution.

FAQs

What are the common challenges faced during MSc Mathematics entrance preparations?

Other candidates are challenged with this huge and wide syllabus that concerns itself with Algebra, Real and Complex Analysis, Differential equations, and Linear algebra. This kind of combination of concept-based and application-based questions makes time management during preparation vital and essential in the exam. Many of the students find it hard to have a thorough theoretical understanding and presence of speed of solving a question, and this occurs in the CUET PG exam with negative marking.

Which entrance exams are most preferred for M.Sc Mathematics admissions in 2025?

The best entrance exams are IIT JAM (Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Admission Test for M.Sc), CUET PG (Common University Entrance Test for Postgraduate), and entrance exams of specific programs, such as the CMI (Chennai Mathematical Institute) entrance exam. There are several other exceptional exams, which include the TIFR Graduate School and individual university-based exams. These exams are a high-standard syllabus, focusing on the foundational branches of mathematics and examining theory and practical levels of solutions.

What are the top universities offering M.Sc Mathematics in 2025?

Among these institutions are the IITs (Delhi, Kanpur, Bombay, etc.), Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, Jadavpur University, Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), and other central and state universities. These colleges provide good research and placement as well and charge a fee depending on the institute.
