National Institute of Technology Agartala was founded as a Tripura Engineering institution in 1965, a public engineering institution. Engineering, management, basic science, and the humanities are among the UG and PG programs offered by NIT Agartala. The National Institute of Technology Agartala is ranked 94th in the Engineering category by IIRF 2025. In 2006, the Indian government changed the name of the Tripura Engineering College to NIT Agartala. AICTE has authorised Agartala NIT. A centrally financed institution, the National Institute of Technology Agartala is the nation's twentieth National Institute of Technology.

NIT Agartala provides undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Students are shortlisted for NIT Agartala's PhD program based on their performance on written exams, and then they go through an interview process. • B.Tech Admission: The candidates should pass JEE Main and undergo JoSAA/CSAB counselling in order to argue on the allocation of seats. The admission strictly depends on the JEE Main rank.
• M.Tech Admission: It is done by GATE scores, and then counselling by CCMT. Applicants who do not have appropriate GATE scores are not usually taken into consideration.
