• Updated on  Jul 17, 2025, by Anusmita Bhatta

BA in Sociology is a 3-year undergraduate program that provides the students with detailed knowledge about how human society works and is organized. It examines social behavior, social institutions, cultures, norms and relationships under different settings/conditions- rural, urban, political, economical and international.

The students learn about aspects like family systems, caste and class relations, gender, education, migration, religion, and globalization. They gain analytical, communication, critical thinking skills through lectures, fieldwork, research projects, and interpretation of data on how societies develop and operate.

Bachelor of Arts in Sociology graduates may find employment in social work, policy research, development studies, civil services, education, human resources, NGOs, journalism, etc. The course is also a base in pursuing advanced education such as MA in Sociology, MSW, MBA or LLB.

The universities either admit through merit (Class 12 marks) or through entrance exams such as CUET UG, etc. The applicants have to fulfill the eligibility norms and abide by the admission rules of each university, which is usually a centralized counseling process or an online seat allocation process.
